The latest statistics show that the highest unemployment is found in the youth and young adult group.
- 34% of the unemployed are between 15 and 25 years old and
- 40% between 25 and 35 years old.
Career guidance is needed to insure that the youth and young adults choose careers that suit their personal profiles (interests, personality, values and abilities) and are in demand so that they can become employable. 85% of students who have degrees, but who are unemployed are black because they tend to study courses with no specific career focus.
It is vitally important for the youth and young adults to have information about the labour market, scarce skills and career opportunities. They need to know the requirements for further study, know about different types of institutions, funding and how to plan their future. They need to be aware and have knowledge about how to manage their own future career life by acquiring skills and knowledge, finding a job or becoming an entrepreneur.
Career choice is highly individual and personal but individual career guidance is not an option in South Africa with the large number of youth who need career guidance.
Remarkable Lives Career Exploration Program is an instrument that covers the spectrum of career guidance with emphasis on self knowledge, exploration and career planning for further study, finding a job and entrepreneurship.
We use assessments instruments to give an indication of strengths and possible development areas as well as problem solving ability, scholastic aptitude, learning potential, etc. This assessment tool has been standardized for learners and adults who have obtained a Grade 10, 11 and 12.
We have other sub-tests that we use that give an indication of potential, problem solving ability, numerical ability, language ability, etc. This test will give a good indication on which type of learner ship would be most suitable for the students, i.e. technical, clerical, etc.
Our Jung Personality Questionnaire gives an indication of personal style in terms of whether the person is an introvert or an extrovert, their natural problem solving style, their natural decision making style, which type of learning environments will suit them, their learning style, interpersonal skills, possible career choice fields to study in, their tendency to follow through on tasks, type of work environment that the student will be best suited to, type of task preference, i.e. preference for routine or variety, etc.
The South African Vocational Interest Inventory (SAVII) gives an indication of possible fields of interest such as practical, scientific, clerical, business, social sciences, etc. All these assessments results in individual reports which are discussed with each learner to ensure that they understand their position.
